Selling
Selling or trading in your road bike: four ways side by side
If your premium road bike fits what we look for, Berg en Baan offers three options: selling it to us directly, putting it on consignment, or trading it in on a bike from our collection. Selling it yourself is the fourth. This overview sets them side by side, so you can see which one suits you.
Where can I sell my road bike?
That depends on what matters most to you. If your road bike fits what we look for, you choose at Berg en Baan between selling to us, consignment and trade-in. Selling it yourself can bring advertising costs or platform commission and mostly takes time: you arrange the photos, messages, viewings, test rides and payment yourself.
Selling or trading in: what is the difference?
When you sell, you part with your road bike without buying another: you either sell it to us or have us sell it on your behalf. When you trade in, it goes towards a bike from our collection, and you pay roughly the price of that bike minus the trade-in value. That value follows our assessment of your bike.
Which ways of selling a road bike are there?
The table sets four ways side by side: who takes over your road bike, what it costs, when your money comes, what it brings and what you do yourself. A consignment order is accepted subject to approval. What consignment costs and how it works is on our consignment page.
Selling to us, consignment, trade-in or selling it yourself
Scroll the table sideways to see all columns.
| Subject | Selling to us | Consignment | Trade-in | Selling it yourself |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Who takes over your road bike | We do | A buyer, through us | We do, when you buy a bike | A buyer you find |
| Costs | No commission | Commission plus costs from the terms | You pay the difference: price minus trade-in value | Advertising costs or platform commission |
| Your money | At handover | After the sale and full payment | Set off against your purchase | When your buyer pays |
| What it brings | An offer, if your bike fits | Selling price minus commission and costs | A trade-in value, based on our assessment | What a buyer pays |
| What you do yourself | Your registration and the handover | The same; we handle buyers and payment | The same, plus your choice from our collection | Everything, from photos to test ride and payment |
What does it cost to have my road bike sold?
Selling to us costs no commission. With consignment you pay a commission on the selling price plus the costs in our terms and conditions; what that means is on our consignment page. With a trade-in you pay roughly the price of the bike you buy minus the trade-in value. Selling it yourself can bring advertising fees or platform commission.
- When selling to us: if you bring the road bike to Son en Breugel yourself, no travel or shipping costs are deducted from our offer. If we collect it or you ship it, we name those costs in our offer.
- With consignment, any costs for collecting or delivering are in our terms and conditions.
What do you look at when assessing my road bike?
We look at the recommended retail price of your model and groupset, its age, the kilometres and its condition. At the assessment we also weigh the version, the wheels, any power meter, upgrades and maintenance; the model name alone is not enough. A custom build is valued more cautiously, subject to our assessment.
- Wear parts: chain and cassette, brake pads, discs, tyres and bearings.
- Whether the road bike has been crashed and whether the frame is damaged.
What do I need to arrange before selling my road bike?
Have the original invoice in your own name at hand, find the frame number and take photos of your road bike. We check every frame number. Also know the condition of the wear parts and whether the bike has ever been crashed.
- You add the invoice as a pdf, jpg or png; in the form you confirm that you are the rightful owner.
- Seven photos, one subject each: the whole bike from the right and from the left, down tube with model name, cassette and chain, crank and rear derailleur, frame number, and head tube with fork crown. Daylight and your phone are enough. If you see damage or wear, add an extra photo.
Which way of selling my road bike suits me?
If your road bike fits what we look for: choose selling to us to be paid straight away, consignment if we should handle the sale and you can wait for your money, and trade-in if you are buying another bike from us. If you have time and want to find the buyer yourself, selling it yourself is a good choice.
- Torn between selling to us and consignment? Choose “I don’t know yet” in the form and we will advise you. With consignment your money only comes once the bike has been sold and paid for in full, and we cannot promise how long that takes. The pros and cons are on our consignment page.
Which bikes do you buy?
For a road bike we look for a top or Pro version from a recent model generation, such as S-Works, Pro, Hi-MOD or CC, with an electronic groupset: Shimano Dura-Ace or Ultegra Di2, SRAM Red or Force AXS, or Campagnolo Super Record. The bike is well maintained and the frame is undamaged.
- The brands, and what we look for in a gravel bike and a mountain bike, are listed under What we buy on our selling page.
- Not on the list? Register it anyway: we will assess it personally.
How do I sell my road bike to Berg en Baan?
You register your bike with the form on our selling page: add your contact details, photos, frame number and invoice. We assess your details and photos and let you know whether we can make you an offer. If you accept it, we arrange the handover.
- In the form you choose direct purchase, consignment or trade-in, or “I don’t know yet”. The online indication is available in Dutch only.
- Handover: you bring the road bike to Son en Breugel or we collect it, within about an hour’s drive. When selling to us you can also ship it in a box with track and trace.
- How quickly: as quickly as possible; a complete registration with all the photos is the fastest. We do not promise a period.
Frequently asked questions about selling a road bike
What is the difference between an indication and an offer?
An indication shows roughly what a bike could bring; it is not an offer. The online calculator is available in Dutch only. In English you register with the form, and after we assess your details and photos we let you know whether we can make you an offer.
Do I need my invoice to sell my road bike?
Yes. You add the original invoice in your own name and confirm in the form that you are the rightful owner. When selling to us or trading in, we buy from the first owner. We check every frame number.
When do I get the money for my road bike?
When selling to us, we pay at handover. With consignment the payout follows once the buyer has paid in full; the period is on our consignment page. With a trade-in we set the trade-in value off against the price of the bike you buy.
Can I also sell my road bike from Belgium?
You can register from anywhere in the Netherlands and Belgium. We collect your road bike within about an hour’s drive of Son en Breugel, or you bring it yourself. When selling to us you can also ship it in a box with track and trace. With consignment, any costs for collecting or delivering are in our terms and conditions.
What if I want to sell my road bike without buying another bike?
If your road bike fits what we look for, you choose selling to us or consignment. A trade-in goes with the purchase of a bike from our collection. If you want to be paid straight away, choose selling to us.
